Pet Transport Scams
One bright morning, many years ago, one of our consultants picked up the phone to an excited flurry of words from a client.
“Hello! I’m calling from Bryanston about my pedigree staffie pup being delivered today from Cape Town; what time can I expect you?” The consultant took a mental gulp and speedily ran through the list of clients arriving that day. Something was definitely wrong; they knew they had absolutely no staffie pups on her books. The consultant started asking questions. When they heard parts of the story, they realised her caller was the target of a pet scam. The consultant had some convincing to do, however, as the emotional caller was absolutely convinced that Animal Travel Agency had handled her pet transportation. Little did the consultant know that the day marked the start of a long and ongoing battle between Animal Travel Agency and pet transport scammers.
Anatomy of a Pet Transport Scam
You’ll find the adverts in a newspaper or on the internet. A valuable, pedigreed or exotic pet, it announces, needs a home so desperately that its available to you, free of charge. Whether a rare breed of dog, a monkey or macaw, it would be a tragedy to put down such a magnificent creature. The pet is yours as long as you pay for delivery; the pet transport company airfreight costs.

I'll be seeing you soon!
You dial the cell phone number, but no-one answers. Before long you get a call back from another cell phone number. Despite being a reputable cat transport company, no, unfortinately, they do not have landline number at present. Upon excitedly asking questions about your new pet, you are reffered to another cell phone number to speak to the animal breeder who assures you the animal is of the highest pedigree, or of the rarest nature and it would indeed be a tragedy to put it down. You offer to drive the long distance and collect the animal yourself and are talked out of your foolishness! The animal is so precious it must be transported correctly, under proper supervision. Of course, the airfreight cost is such a small price to pay for something so valuable, and despite the bank tranfer details being a little strange, you pay. And how wonderful! You receive the thank you email, reminding you what a loving and fantastic person you must be to save this animal, and attached are some heart warming pictures of ‘Pookie’ or ‘Pudgie’; your new pet.
A day or so later, however, the second email arrives pointing out an unforseen problem. The airline, it seems, simply will not send such a precious animal without the correct insurance. You hesitate and are told that a person from their company will be with the animal for the duration of the flight, overseeing their care. The CITES certificate is already filled out in your name. And additionally, you’re running out of time to save the animal at all. Sounding logical, you pay the additional sum of money to cover the ‘insurance charges’.
You’re given the relevant contact details of the agent of the pet transport company, and the exciting date of arrival. On that morning, you dial the number, feeling the warmth and happiness of your good deed, and aniticipation about your gorgeous new pet.. to find that no-one has ever heard of you, or your pet. In fact, the pet never existed and you’ve just been scammed.
How do You Tell The Difference Between a Scam and an Animal in Need?
Only a company with long-term experience in the field will be able to catch out a scammer. Animal Travel Agency instantly picks up discrepancies, such as:
- An exotic or pedigreed pet would never be put down – it is simply too valuable
- People are not allowed in an airplane cargo hold
- No animal transport company would dissuade you from collecting an animal yourself
- It is neither legal nor possible to insure an animal for freight travel in South Africa
- Pet transport companies know one another from years in the field and will know a fly-by-night name instantly, for example Animal Travel Agemcy encountered a fake company ‘Pet Flights’ who scammed a lovely lady R8500 for two mythical puppies.
- Reputable companies also know the genuine contact details of all the other real animal transportation companies. Animal Travel Agency itself has had its entire website duplicated, and logo’s used on emails, but with fake cell phone numbers as the contact point
- No establiched company will operate only through cell phones or use non standard banking practices such as using a Western Union bank account.
Why are The Pet Scammers Still Winning?
This scam relies on six things. First, the rush of emotion of an animal lover to save a threatened animal. Secondly, the sense of getting a bargain by paying so little for such a valuable pet. Third, with the insurance scam, when you’ve paid once its easier to pay a second time. Four, that unless you’ve transported pets already, you will not know the proper procedures, such as getting quotations, updates and having working hour access to your assigned agent on fax, email and landline telephone numbers. Five, that the pictures will keep you believing that the animal exists. Animal Travel Agency has had concerned callers who have simply refused to believe that they are being scammed, since they saw the photographs. And finally, since the scammers operate on cell phones, there’s no way to trace them once they disappear with your money.
No one should be penalised for giving an animal in need a good home. But unfortunately pet transport scammers are even more active these days than when they started fifteen years ago. If buying a pet from a classified ad its essential that you find a way to cross-reference the information you have with a proffessional animal transport company. Be careful not to become another in a long line of very disappointed animal lovers, with a depleted bank balance.
Contact Animal Travel Agency for all Pet Transport connected to South Africa, if you fear you may be the victim of a scam.

Some good information in your post. Thanks for the pleasant read!
hi, i got scammed, i think.
i need help. please.
is there a way to get my money back?
I saw this on Gumtree about 3 weeks ago and I inquired. only to find out that the owner is in Zimbabwe. I left and after a week Smith Jones emailed me saying that I can adopt his babies. He will arrange for it to be transported at a fee of R1000. This was a bargain. I asked for pics which he forward.
I decided to play along and see if this is genuine. Got an email from international pet shippers confirming the assignement. There is no details of the flight registered at Cape Town iNternational airport and no information of the International pet shippers on the net.
I requested delivery agreement which he sent. I just decided that this is a scam. Money must go through Western Union because of there company being audited etc….
Address Cameroon. No man, how can these people be so cruel to play with your emotions.
Good morning

He uses a person wich so called work for Pet Transport Services International, but this company does not operate in South Africa. Cellphone numbers they use are 0725416553 and 0725021509. THANK YOU TO THIS SITE I GOT THE TRUTH I NEEDED. PLS BE CAREFUL BEFORE YOU BUY ANIMALS FROM FAR AWAY.
We got scammed – they are devils – my sis recently lost her 7month old Yorkie which was bitten to death. Still very emotional about the happening she started to search for a replacement. Saw the ad on OLX.co.za The had an advert for every major city in South Africa – same photo – same details – Ithink these clasified sites needs to be more “awake” about these things. Unfortunately my mom paid for the delivery of the dogs to their small Northern Cape town – R3500 – they lost it. They forwarded me the mails with the photos of two yories to show me the puppies they just bought – I saw that alot of the stuff in their correspondence looked suspicious and it was confirmed. We phoned the bank, less than an hour after payment was made – monies gone already!!! The bank immediately blocked the account and logged an investigation for closure of the account – I also reported to the SAPD Commercial Crimes Unit. Please everyone, they really play with your emotions – BE CAREFULL – the number given was 078 7899 633 – same courier company as above – email address: lucia-marisa@live.com – Want to have some fun….? go to google and do a search on this mail address lucia-marisa@live.com – they are EVERYWHERE all over the world!
Just been scammed by lucia-marisa@live .com – out of deposit!
Fortunately did not pay R4000 required for pet-box
Kindly give me your SAP contact detail so that I can give it to our Centurion Police Branch.
Having Trouble to get resolution from ABSA – they do know their client detail, (lucia-marisa) but refuse to give to me. (confidentiality) Now I want to give to SAP .
To force the info from ABSA SO THAT WE CAN FOLLOW LEGAL PROCEDURES!!!
Lost deposit can`t get refund from ABSA.

just been scammed by a guy selling bullmastiff puppies. sold them for R2500 including delivery to your door, he has a french accent and then after you pay the deposit he takes the dog to the courier company called Safe Handle and Delivery Animal Transport. When it comes to the time that it must be shipped, there is all of a sudden another deposit of R3300 that must be paid to this courier company. Was almost scammed by someone from “Cameroon”? with an ad for a sphynx kitten on gumtree. The persons email adress is wilmariefritz@yahoo.com. The ad was on Gumtree only for one day. Thankyou Google !!!. Otherwise I would’ve lost some money.
I fell victim to a scam!
Please be aware of the following:
Saw an advert on OLX for teacup pekingese for sale for R 1500-00. Contacted the seller and within a day or two everything was arranged and paid for. Paid R 1500-00 for the puppy named “Lola” and another R500-00 for delivery via Safe Handle Delivery Service to my door.
Received an e-mail from the courier service stating that I needed to pay an additional R 2300-00 for a crate that will be safe for the puppy and they will not deliver the puppy without the correct crate. I became suspect because the puppy was being delivered from Port Elizabeth and not Nelspruit as previously mentioned. I contacted the seller immediately – Mr. Taylor Madison – and he said that they moved to PE 2 days before. This was strange as I started dealing with him 3 days prior!
I did not pay the additional costs and mailed him stating that I cannot afford this as he failed to mention it when we started dealing and requested him to refund my money paid. Still waiting for a reply!
The info I have on him are as follows:

I would feel better knowing I could help somebody else falling victim to something similar.
Does anybody have any advice where to go to lodge a formal complaint or get the account numbers and cell numbers blocked?

saw an ad for French Mastiff pups, R2500.00 delivery to our door, from PE to JHB via Safe Handle Delivery Service , puppy was supposed to have been delivered today, i have infact just received another email stating it will be on the first flight tomorrow as there were technical difficulties with the flight, I contacted SAA and they informed me that the flight was fine, ontime and no animals were booked on that flight.
if anyone else has anymore info they can assist with please let me know, so we may track these people down.

Hi I just got scammed by the same woman and luckily the pics she sent me were a little suspect so I asked some more questions and she didnt respond on them. Her e-mail to me was exactly the same as
Lauren’s second one however the dog’s name was Maxy.
I am glad for the forum as I could also easily have believed this scam if not for the wonders of internet. I do feel really sorry for other people who are caught in this trap!
Herewith the e-mail adresses they used:

They just contacted me regarding a boerboel male one year old…. photos of a very old female boerboel. I almost gave them all my details!!!! Beware people!

please advice
Erdmann
please note erdmann lange is using an fnb account now. my contact at fnb will give me all the account details tomorrow. this will be splashed all i can. i lost R3k
This person – Erdmann Lange, is a SCAM artist of NOTE and so is the “courier Company” that he uses which is actually Erdmann Lange himself – different No. – differnet name – same person – people – be very AWARE and do not order anything from him! I ordered a Havanese Pup from him and it was all just a load of complete bull…. – he has no puppies of any variety available … he is a liar and he must just watch the flip out – he is GOING TO GET HIS COMUPPANCE. Just remember, you Tosser – what you sow, you reap!! He says he is from Nelspruit – what is his home number? What is the courier’s office number? NOTHING AVAILABLE. He used a CAPITEC Bank Account No. to EFT these amounts to…. What a huge SCAM – Erdmann, if you read this and I’m pretty sure that you will – GOD WILL GET YOU – MARK MY WORDS. You are being hunted down as we speak. Tell him you would like to collect your puppy yourself – he will simply diconnect the call. We lost R5 500 – they are now trying to get (via their so called courier service) into a very secure estate – all they need to do is to phone me with an “we are here, please ask the guards to allow us in” – and we will probably be ambushed! The courier co. is called “Safe pet and handle” – You have all been warned!! If you cannot actually see your pet “In person” – do NOT BUY from these idiots!! My Heart is broken – my puppy WAS literally A VERY EXPENSIVE DREAM! Ermann Lange – you and your courier company are one and the same person – with your seriously phoney french zot accents! May God help you once you die. You lying IDIOT
Please beware of a man called Erdmann Lange. He is scamming people with ‘Havanese’ puppies. He operates from ‘many’ cities in SA. He gets you to EFT him money for the puppy and arranges the flight to you. He then asks you for a further deposit for the flight … Guess what no puppy ever arrives. There are only 3 of us legitimate Havanese breeders in SA at this point in time. Check with KUSA before buying any puppy! Please do your homework. I am devasted for the people contacting me that have been caught by this evil dude!
Thanks for this forum – just nearly got scammed by Mr Susan Pall!!!
Placed an ad on Gumtree for a Bernese Mountain dog puppy. Susan Pall contacted me an said the same thing, as the did for Lauren.
They have a female and male puppy available. They moved to Durban and don’t have enough time, to spend with the puppies!!
She even send me pics of Lindy. I suggested I would make the necessary travel arrangements. She told me, that if I was not able to collect the puppy at her house, she wants to register her under a home delivery service. I confronted her, saying I saw these scam warnings on the internet. I am waiting for her to reply….but don’t think I will be hearing from her again….!!!!
Feel very sorry for the people that fell in their traps!!! I almost also did!!!! Wanted a Bernese puppy so badly, didn’t want to believe that it could be a scam.
My thoughts go out to you guys!
Been offered Rottweiler pup at a low price by a guy called Marc from Uppington. Says he will courier the dog to me. Worried it could be a scam. Anybody recognise the name?
Hi. Can anyone out there tell me if a lady by the name Robyn Angela Lowe who’s selling exotic shorthair kittens is a legitimate breeder? I’ve encountered her ad on Locanto. And the price incl delivery is R2300? Do you know if this is a scam? She’s apparently from P. E ? I’m to make her payment tomorrow for my kitten, Fifi??
Hi. I answered an add regarding a puppy for sale. The puppy had to be couriered from Bloemfontein to Durban at a fee. Something didn’t seem right, a google search of the email address laura2007@hotmail.co.za showed what could be a massive scam. Investigate before parting with your money.
Hi there, I have paid R 1.250 as a deposit for a Savannah kitten – to Robyn ANgela Lowe in PE. They just made one very big mistake – they sold the same kitten to another lady, and forwarded her my proof of payment by mistake. So she calle dme this afternoon. I then called dear ANgela, who informed me that she is a religious, god fearing person, and she does not understand what the problem is – I will get my kitten. She sent me a copy of her ID – which I believe is doctored. ANother mistake they amde is that they asked the othetr lady for additional funds for a crate, and gave her the account number I paid in for my kitten. And the cellphone number they gave the other lady for her seller, is the same as dear Angela. I have several email addresses of those people now, two SBSA bank accounts, and the copy of the ID. I know I have been had, and the money is gone – but I will not let this go! Be careful!!!!
Almost got scammed too… Luckily I picked up on it when “Susan Pall” was asking for insurance money to have the pups delivered from Cape Town. I can’t believe people take advantage of people who really wants pups. I am not even going to bother to e-mail her back. I am just hoping that people reads this and don’t fall into her trap. She even send me pics!
Hi there,
I have just been scammed by a Bryant Chester Mogan or so he told me. He was advertising a teacup chihuahua puppy by the name Candice for R2000-00 in Nelspruit. He is using the address of other people (53 van wijk street, Nelspruit). If you get in contact with him don’t pay it is a scam. Two days after paying him he never answered his phone or email. Then I got a email from the Delivery Agency saying that I need to pay for the crate and food for the puppy in the amount of R1500-00. After looking at this website I realised it was a scam. He gave me a address (225 Courier5 Pty, 2nd floor , Kruger international Airport, Mpumalanga) that is fake and a cellphone number (0782027985), His name is Erdmann Lange. I phone Animal Travel seeing as they are the longest courier company and even they say they haven’t heard of this person.
So please I am 20 years old and have been scammed by Bryant Chester Mogan, thats whats stood on the ID. The Bank account number that he gave me is as follows:
Absa

hi – i got scammed this past week by two German males called Mulder Lott and MIlner Parker for a Maine Coon kitten for my 4 year old son.
ABSA and Standard Bank have been fantastic but unfortunately he has made off with a lot of money – not just mine. All accounts have been locked and hopefully some funds will come back to me. other people have been notified.
it is sickening that people can get away with this. if anyone needs their email address or banking details to add to their case please let me know. my case has been registered at the Sandton Police station.
